Schoolhouse Software, a leader in the
development of software that manages K-12 school food
service operations, has hit upon a winning combination of
speed and simplicity in its latest version of its popular
Touch-n-Serv point of sale (POS) software.
Speed is king in a fast-paced business like public
school cafeterias, where shaving seconds off the time it
takes to serve a lunch can mean more time for kids to eat.
The company’s Touch-n-Serv POS software is built to
speed students through multiple serving lines, accounting
for sales that are free, reduced or paid with a minimum
number of keystrokes. “Touch-n-Serv is all about speed.
Cashiers like it, and line speed is faster than anything
we had ever seen before,” says Janet Clesceri, director
of child nutrition services at Hesperia Unified School
District.
The Touch-n-Serv software
tracks whether or not a student is eligible for a free or
reduced fee meal depending on their application status. If
the student owes money, the cashier is automatically
presented with a pop-up screen with special buttons for
quickly entering the amount tendered and recording the
transaction. Touch-n-Serv also can be configured to run
fast with bar-coded ID cards or keypad input devices where
serving by photo or roster is not feasible, typically in
speed lines or high schools where students do not come
through in alphabetical order or by homeroom. In these
cases, food service staff can make use of the software’s
ability to hold or “buffer” student identification
numbers entered by students before getting to the cashier,
i.e., while they wait in line to check out. With a high
number of students being served, the time saving can be
significant. There are also safeguards built-in to
Touch-n-Serv so that cashier’s can be alerted to common
student issues, such as food allergies.
Another important
consideration in point of sale software is ease of use.
Most school food service operations rely on non-skilled,
non-computer literate staffers to ring up the daily sales
transactions. High turnover is common, so a system that
shortens operator learning curve is crucial. Tim
McCormick, Senior Computer Operator for the Child
Nutrition Department at Stockton Unified School District
adds, “We not only found the system to be extremely easy
to learn and operate, but simple to install. Touch-n-Serv
more than met our expectations right from the
beginning.” Janet Barth of nutrition services at Morongo
Unified School District agrees, “The Touch-n-Serv
software was ‘WAY easy’ to install!”
In a typical installation, Touch-n-Serv POS systems at
individual schools are networked to a central server in
the district office where up to date eligibility and
student information needed to process meal transactions is
stored. The Touch-n-Serv software employs data redundancy
functionality at each serving line, so cashiers can
continue serving while the main server is down. When the
main server comes back on line, each touch screen POS
device synchronizes transaction data with the main server.
Touch-n-Serv offers food service directors the ability to
choose from a variety POS terminal options to fit their
operational needs, including rugged POS terminals, touch
screen monitors and wireless POS solutions.
